From Doubt to Triumph: A Writer's Guide to Overcoming Fear and Achieving Success

What's the one thing that scares you most as an author? Go on, don't be shy. We're all friends here.

Authors, just like everyone else, experience a roller coaster of emotions. In these demanding times, the lows can profoundly affect your creative journey. But it's okay to acknowledge that there are thoughts and fears that daunt us, holding us back from progressing. These fears ignite self-doubt, erode our self-esteem, and if not addressed, can lead us into a pit of despondency. But remember, these are hurdles, not dead ends - they can be overcome.

Life isn't always smooth sailing. It's filled with unexpected detours and roadblocks. However, don't let these challenges deter you. Sometimes, all you need to keep moving forward is a leap of faith and the determination to cross the finish line of publication.

Battling Fear and Embracing Healing

Fear can be a real speed bump, slowing us down, resisting progress, and leaving us feeling stuck. It can make us question our abilities as authors and drain our confidence.

Fears breed negativity and can foster a defeatist mentality among authors. Often, they stem from past experiences that were out of our control. It's astonishing how fear can sap your energy as a writer, particularly if you don't have the right tools to combat it.

Remember, as an author, you are often your own biggest critic and obstacle. However, the battles within you don’t have to be endless unless you choose to let them be. Stand firm with confidence and unwavering faith to conquer your fears.

Understanding the root cause of a problem is the first step towards finding a solution. So, ask yourself:

  • What's your purpose as an author?

  • What's the biggest hurdle you're facing?

  • Are people interested in you or your book?

  • Who do you want to inspire?

  • How do you plan to convey your message?

As authors, we often find ourselves on a creative rollercoaster filled with exhilarating highs and disheartening lows. The journey can be demanding, with fear acting as a constant adversary that breeds negativity, saps your confidence, and creates seemingly insurmountable obstacles. However, remember that fear is not the final destination, but merely a hurdle to be overcome on your path to success.

Earlier this year, I had a fruitful discussion with Coach Keller Coleman on his M.A.P. TV podcast, where I shared my journey from employee to self-employed author and the five strategies that helped me overcome fear. You can watch the entire podcast here, but here's a quick summary:

Five Steps to Renew Your Spirit and Conquer Fear

1. Positive Affirmation

Begin by understanding your worth and potential. Embrace the fact that you're an achiever, unique, remarkable, and a victor. Regularly affirming these truths will boost your morale. Surround yourself with optimistic individuals who share a winning mindset. Be mindful of what you absorb, as it influences what you project to others.

Declare daily affirmations such as "I am an overcomer", "I am unique", "I am amazing", and "I am a conqueror". These positive words can uplift your spirit and fuel your motivation. Surround yourself with optimistic individuals who share a winning mindset. Be vigilant about what you absorb, for it influences what you project onto others.

2. Starting the Day Right

Mornings can set the tone for the rest of your day. Start each day with something that uplifts your spirits, whether that's an inspirational quote or a passage from a spiritual book like the Bible. This small act can ignite your faith and positivity, providing a strong foundation for the day ahead.

3. Increasing Your Knowledge

Knowledge truly is power. By learning a new skill, reading a book, or seeking guidance from a coach, you can build your confidence and broaden your horizons. As an author, continuous learning will nurture your growth, unlock your potential, and gradually dispel your fears.

4. Gratitude Journal

Amidst the hustle and bustle, it's easy to overlook the blessings in our lives. Cultivating a habit of gratitude can help shift your focus away from fear and towards appreciation. Start each day by jotting down at least five things you're grateful for. This simple practice can provide a much-needed perspective and boost your morale.

5. Facing Your Fears

It's okay to be scared. Fear is a natural part of the human experience, but it doesn't have to control you. What's important is showing up and pushing through. Your book serves as a platform to inspire and engage your audience, a purpose that's far greater than any fear. Confront your fears head-on, and remember that every challenge brings with it an opportunity for growth.Always strive for progress. With faith and authenticity, things will fall into place.

These strategies, when practiced regularly, can bolster your faith and provide the momentum to keep moving forward as an author. The world is waiting for you to take the leap, to show up, and to begin. Remember, every hurdle you encounter is a chance to learn and grow.
